how we stay in shape over 50!

Have you heard of Quitters Day? It’s the second Friday of the new year when most people give up their new year’s resolutions. Let’s be real, who doesn’t struggle with keeping new year’s resolutions?!? In our last blog, we shared that we are focusing on some new things in 2025 – goals for our mind, body, and soul. Today, we want to share our workout routines!!

Just like everyone, we’ve had our ups and downs in our fitness routines throughout the years. When our kids were growing up we sometimes struggled to fit it all in.  We’ve dealt with injuries and the occasional lack of motivation, but we know exercise is a must to keep us healthy, active and mentally positive as we age!

We get asked about our workout routine A LOT! We shared a blog about it a few years ago but thought we’d give an update here as so much has changed!! We’re now in a different season of life. Demands with our blog are higher (thank you!!), we’re now both grandmas (ahh!!!), and we also just prefer different forms of exercise now.

One thing we’ll emphasize: everyone is unique and needs to do what works for them! Here is what works for us.

Julie’s Workout Routine

I wish it wasn’t true, but I’ve learned that I need the accountability of a class, a gym membership, or basically something I’m laying out cash for to keep me motivated to workout. About three years ago, I switched up my workout routine from mainly spin workouts and yoga to a focus on weight training. I loved using the Peloton app for the amazing variety of workouts but overtime, I began to feel like I wasn’t seeing the RESULTS I expected for the amount of time and money I was putting in. I also kept hearing people talk about “tracking their macros”…could this be my missing link??

Our friend @partytildawn suggested I try the Faster Way to Fat Loss app, which includes comprehensive weight training workouts, a menu plan, and voila…a macro tracker! Come to find out, “macros” are macronutrients like protein, carbs, and fats. Mystery solved! I signed up for a two-week intro on the app and within a couple of days I had my answer…I definitely wasn’t getting enough protein! I also learned within the first week that I LOVED the FWTFL workouts – they were more challenging and varied, and also included HIIT for cardio two days/week. Because I love the workouts and am actually seeing better results, I’ve been way more consistent with my workout routine.

Goals for 2025: I’d like to add in 8,000-10,000 steps a few times a week. I’d also like to purchase a weighted vest and add that to my walks. My actual dream, and I’m just going to put it out there, is to complete the 100-mile Cotswold Way walk in England with my daughter this spring! And if not this year, hopefully it will happen in the near future!

Krista’s Workout Routine

I have always been a consistent exerciser. I grew up loving athletics (track and soccer) and I love to compete! I’m one of those weirdos that loves to exercise! I used to do more high intensity exercises, but years of activity have led to pretty bad arthritis in my knee. So, I’ve had to change up my exercises. I’ve given up running for lower impact workouts, per my knee’s insistence. I enjoy the Peloton bike and getting outside for mountain and road biking. Also, I LOVE yoga and I have recently discovered Pilates and love the strength it has brought to my core. I cross train by alternating biking, yoga, Pilates and weight lifting to stay healthy, enjoy moving my body and hopefully avoid injuries!

Goals for 2025: I would like to take more days off during the week! That might sound crazy for a new year’s goal. I usually exercise 6-7 days a week and I’d like to keep it to 5 days to give my body a chance to rest. I love the feeling of being fit and strong and I love to push myself, but I also need to do what is right for my body at this time. Even as I have had to change my activities due to injuries, I try to stay thankful for what my body CAN do, instead of focusing on what it CAN’T do. It is important to keep the body moving and I am finding new ways to do just that!

  1. Love this! I’ve always been reasonably active, and I get 10,000 steps most days, but you two have motivated me to get even more active more consistently this year. I plan to focus mostly on heavy weights. I’ll keep you posted!
