Casual to dressy! With even a little pattern mixing thrown in–styling snakeskin is more versatile than you may think!

rule #1: style with a neutral

leopard top with white denim and black pumps
I love how this subtle stone print picks up the light color of my cream jeans. Just add the black in the shoes and purse!

The black spots in leopard print make styling it with black pieces and accessories a no-brainer. It’s a classic and chic combo that will always be in style!

rule #2: keep the rest of outfit simple

Adding this leopard turtleneck brings brown and black into my outfit. Styling with brown boots and a denim jacket completes the look! Leopard adds fun visual interest as opposed to a plain color.

Styling with patterns is easy when you keep the other pieces in the outfit solid. Think of your pattern as the neutral and choose a color palette for your other pieces that complement the pattern colors. Here I’ve chosen a warm palette of brown and cream to pair with the green of my snakeskin skirt.

The easiest way to style a bold pattern is to pick up one color from the pattern and use that color to complete the outfit. I chose black from this bold pattern – a black top, black shoes and a black purse make green leopard the star of the show!

rule #3: consider pattern a neutral that goes with any color–even another texture or print

camo pants with white eyelet top and white slingback flats
Camo is such an easy print to style, because it goes with everything! Consider it a neutral like black, white, cream, denim, etc., and add any color! Here I’ve added a white blouse and shoes and finished the outfit with this cute brown purse!
lightweight camo jacket with floral graphic tee and white booties
My favorite thing to pair with camo is a graphic print! The edginess of camo works perfectly with a fun & casual graphic tee. I love the relaxed vibe it gives! Make it even more unexpected by dressing it up with booties or heels!

rule #4: add interest & update your look with a patterned jacket or accessory

faux fur leopard coat with lightwash jeans and black booties
This leopard faux fur coat was such a fun item to style during the fall and winter! I kept the rest of my outfit simple and added this updated jacket for instant style pizazz!! I felt like it was the perfect thing to wear shopping or out to dinner.
glitter sweater with leopard belt and coated black jeans and suede pumps
I wanted a leopard belt but didn’t want to spend a lot of money because I wasn’t sure how much I would use it. Boy, was I wrong! It’s now one of my favorite accessories and I add it to my outfits all the time. It’s just that little extra “something” that can add interest to an otherwise boring or monochrome outfit. Adding a simple accessory in a print, like a belt or earrings, is an easy & less risky way to try on a trend.

Are patterns out of your fashion comfort zone? For example, do you shy away from pattern trends such as leopard, snakeskin, florals, tie dye, etc? Hopefully we’ve encouraged you to add pattern to your outfits to add visual interest and an update to your current wardrobe. Start small with a belt or purse and build from there. Moving forward, we hope our tips help you know how to style patterns with confidence!
