Walla Walla Itinerary: Our Three-Day Travel Guide

Walla Walla is one of our absolute favorite destinations, especially since it’s just a few hours from Seattle! It feels like a completely different world: wine country! The rolling vineyards, charming streets, and historic hotels make it feel like you’ve been transported far from the city. It’s the perfect spot for a day trip from Seattle or to make an entire weekend out of it. We’ve gone so many times over the last few years for birthdays, weekend getaways, and just to soak up the wine country vibes!!

Walla Walla Itinerary

From the gorgeous hotel we stayed at to the quaint downtown streets and the vineyards surrounding the city, Walla Walla offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Some days we were sipping wine in a sun-soaked tasting room, other days we were strolling through boutique shops and enjoying local cuisine, and the hospitality was incredible everywhere we went!!

Because Walla Walla is such a special place, we wanted to share this itinerary to help anyone planning their next trip to this lovely town. Whether it’s your first trip or you’re returning for more wine-country adventures, this post will show you how to make the most of your time, what to see, and even some insider tips we learned along the way!!!

Our Three-Day Travel Guide

If you’re planning a trip to Walla Walla, this guide will be super helpful! We’ve packed it with everything you need to know, including full days of activities, wine tastings, dining recommendations, shopping stops, and a detailed itinerary to make the most of your visit.

From historic hotels to wineries, charming boutiques, and delicious restaurants, this itinerary has it all! We’ve also included tips on walking the downtown streets, exploring vineyards outside the city, and how to plan your time so you can enjoy every moment.

Where Is Walla Walla Located

Walla Walla is located in southeastern Washington, about a three-hour drive from Seattle. Walla Walla has two airports that offer direct flights to the region. One is the Walla Walla airport with daily flights to and from Seattle and the other is the Pasco Airport that is about a 45 minute drive with flights from Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, and more. It’s also known for its award-winning wineries, historic downtown, and nice people! :)

Its location makes it easy to combine a trip to Walla Walla with other parts of Washington or Oregon, and the city itself is super walkable, which we love!

Is Walla Walla Worth Visiting

YES!! Walla Walla is one of those towns you can visit multiple times and always discover something new. What we love most is how seamlessly you can combine wine, food, shopping, and history into one trip. We could spend a morning sipping wine at a modern downtown tasting room, then stroll the charming streets for boutique shopping, and finish the day with an incredible dinner in town.

The city is full of energy but also moments of relaxation. In fact, we loved wandering Main Street on a sunny fall day, tasting wines at family-owned wineries, and enjoying the cozy, historic hotel we stayed in. It’s also worth visiting for the wine, the food, the boutique shopping, and honestly just the experience!!!

What To Do In Walla Walla

There’s no shortage of things to do in Walla Walla! Here are some of our favorites and tips on how to enjoy each experience:

Sip Wine at Local Wineries

Walla Walla is famous for its wine, and there are tastings everywhere! From modern downtown spots like Dossier to family-founded estates like Reali, each winery has its own personality and offerings. We also loved learning about the winemaking process and chatting with owners and staff!! They are so passionate about what they do.

Explore Downtown Shops

Downtown Walla Walla is perfect for wanderingThe boutique stores and charming shops make it so easy to spend a morning exploring! We loved Liz + Kay for elevated casual pieces, Walla Walla Clothing Co. for designer brands, and also Studio Opal Boutique for fun accessories and skincare!

Enjoy the Food Scene

The dining in Walla Walla is incredible! From the lively Italian fare at PassoTempo to elevated dining at The Marc Restaurant, every meal was so delicious. Don’t miss local favorites for lunch, like sandwiches at the Chevron Wine Country Store which are made with fresh focaccia bread!

Appreciate the History

We’ve stayed at The Marcus Whitman Hotel several times and it’s our favorite! The building is historic but offers a luxurious modern stay. In fact, we really enjoyed our tour with the hotel’s General Manager who showed us the new renovations!

There are 4 tasting rooms within the hotel and they have perks for guests of the hotel, too. Their tasting rooms – Nine Hats, Beekeeper by Abeja, L’Ecole Nº 41 Heritage Wine Bar, and Lodmell Cellars – are all just steps from your room. Guests also get access to Wine Club perks, like discounted tastings and bottles!!

Walk Around Downtown

Main Street is perfect for a morning stroll, especially in the fall when the leaves are turning! In addition, the streets are lined with shops, cafes, and wine tasting rooms. Who doesn’t love that!?

Visit More Wineries

Outside of downtown, there are so many beautiful wineries with mountain views. Our favorites included Abeja, Seven Hills, L’Ecole, Alton, Longshadows, Doubleback, and Dunham.

Walla Walla Trip Itinerary

Here’s how we spent our three days in Walla Walla. But you can adjust it depending on your trip length or add extra wine tastings!

Day 1:

Left at 10 a.m. from Seattle for 3:00 p.m. arrival in Walla Walla. Stop in Yakima for a quick lunch.

3:00 p.m.: Krista & Philip check-in and grab a glass of wine at the Abeja wine tasting room inside the gorgeous hotel.

4:30 p.m.: Tour with General Manager Justin. He shared the recent renovations that have preserved the old-world feel of this historic landmark building while updating it for a luxurious and modern stay.

5:30 p.m.: Happy Hour at Brasserie Four. Two blocks from The Marcus Whitman Hotel, and in fact, several locals recommended this French restaurant. Next time, we’re coming back for dinner!

6:30 p.m.: Dinner at PassoTempo. A local favorite, this restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine and bespoke cocktails. The atmosphere is also lively and fun, and the food is 10/10. So this is a must-stop every time we’re in town, and reservations are recommended.

Day 2:

8:00 a.m.: Coffee & walk down Main Street.
A lovely walk on a beautiful fall day! The weather in Walla Walla stays warmer into the fall than the Seattle area. The fall leaves were so beautiful! Staying at The Marcus Whitman Hotel is so convenient. It’s easy walking distance to Main Street and the downtown shops, winery tasting rooms, and boutiques!

10:00–11:30 a.m.: Browse the shops

• Liz and Kay – totally our style! Lots of elevated casual pieces. Krista bought a pretty lace midi skirt, and Julie also picked up a cute date night top!
• Walla Walla Clothing Co. – An excellent selection of elevated brands like Rails, Brochu Walker, Velvet, Paige, and more! It’s always a highlight to visit this beautiful store. They have men’s clothing as well.
• Studio Opal Boutique – This is such a fun store, full of accessories, casual styles, and quality skincare.

11:30 a.m.: Dossier wine tasting
A modern approach to Washington luxury wine by former Seahawk Sidney Rice and Tim Lenihan. We loved the modern tasting room in downtown Walla Walla, and their whites and reds were all delicious!

1:00 p.m.: Lunch in downtown Walla Walla
There’s so many places to grab lunch within walking distance of the the tasting rooms and The Marcus Whitman Hotel!

2:00 p.m.: Reali Winery – Family-founded, north of downtown Walla Walla. The Reali estate is set among rolling wheat fields with views of the Blue Mountains. They offer seated tastings, a vineyard picnic, or an elevated food and wine pairing. Super hospitality-focused. We also had a fun time chatting with the founding couple, who have a passion for wine and hospitality!

3:30 p.m.: Browse shops

• 35th and Butter – Kitchen items, clothing, fun and creative gift ideas, wine-themed gifts. So fun to look around and so much to see and take in. A must on your shopping day!

6:00 p.m.: The Marc Restaurant
Elevated dining experience, amazing service, delicious food – steak, pasta, seafood, salads, etc. Newly renovated beautiful dining room, relaxing and luxurious ambiance. If you really want to level up your night, book their brand-new Chef’s Table experience! You and your crew (4–10 people) get to sit right in the kitchen, chat with the chefs, and enjoy a custom multi-course feast made just for you. It’s intimate, interactive, and honestly such a cool way to make dinner feel like an event!!

Day 3:

11:00 a.m.: Checkout.
Friendly staff that remembered our names! We hated to leave!

Travel Tips and Recommendations

• Bring comfortable walking shoes for exploring downtown and wineries.
• Stay hydrated – especially if tasting wine all day!
• Book restaurant reservations ahead of time for popular spots like PassoTempo and The Marc Restaurant.
• Explore both downtown tasting rooms and nearby estate wineries for a full experience.
• Take time to wander – both the shops and the streets are full of surprises.
